Healthy Little Note: Issue #50
Hi there!
Hope everyone had a great Halloween... as promised, above is a pic of my littles this year. I can't believe they're getting so big!
So, how did changing the clocks go for everyone? I know for some of you it wasn't too shabby since you've been adjusting things over last week. Yay! But... I completely forgot how late it feels come Sunday night.
I was seriously struggling to keep my eyes open come 8:30pm! Just a reminder... don't forget to keep moving forward and continue the same rhythms and timing you had before on the new clock time.
Now onto this week's newsletter.
I have a little something for you on how to help change a behavior you keep nagging your little one about, an article that clears up some common misconceptions about the flu vaccine, six tips on how to turn that frown upside down, and some thoughts for you on when grandparents babysit and all the rules you worked so hard to put in place go out the backdoor.
Let's do this!
* * *
1. ANNOYING HABITS?
Do you often find yourself nagging your children to stop a behavior that you'd like to change? You know, the ones that you feel like you're nagging them to stop.
... Those behaviors that aren't harmful but not adaptive or necessarily appropriate like using a utensil to eat, telling them to stop sucking their fingers, or remembering to flush the toilet.
Well, apparently research suggests you need to stop the nagging. You are more likely going to increase the behavior by giving it attention. So what are you to do?
Check out this great article from NY Parenting on what you should do instead! I'll be working on the utensils and finger sucking with my kids.
What will you be working on?

2. TO GET THE FLU VACCINE OR NOT
I don't know about you, but I always contemplate whether or not to get a flu vaccine. Last year it just happened that my husband and daughter got the vaccine, and my son and I didn't.
This wasn't planned out... life events just led to this situation. Well, my son and I were hit hard - laid out 2 weeks straight whereas the smart vaccinated ones got off scott free last winter.
This article from our friends over at What's Up Moms demystifies 8 common misconceptions about the flu shot including "Last year I got the flu vaccine and still got the flu".

3. NEED MORE HAPPINESS?
Did you know that stepping outside into nature can help decrease your cortisol levels (that stress hormone we naturally release) and help experience a more positive mood?
Check out this article by Well + Good who interviewed optimism doctor Deepika Chopra on ways you can turn around your no good very bad day!

4. LET THEM BE SPOILED ... TO A POINT
If you're lucky enough to be close to grandparents, they are a great FREE childcare option to get a date night in. The question... is a slight deviation from your rules ok or is bending the rules undermining you and the time you spent establishing them?
Apparently, we are divided in how we feel about this situation. This great Medium article puts both camps into perspective and may help you think about the situation a little differently.
I know I'm going to try and be more laid-back and call that time as special time with the grandparents... to a point ;) hahaha.

5. WHERE TO FIND ME NEXT...
On Tuesday November 19th from 6-7pm, I will be hosting a live newborn sleep workshop in collaboration with Hatch Collection in Brentwood.
You can find the event and register here. Plus you get a store discount AND you get to treat yourself to their Cravings Bar (my favorite part!).
Then...
Right before the holiday on November 22nd, you can find me at Beverly Hills Pediatrics for another talk on Newborn Sleep AND Younger Baby/Toddler Sleep (as young as 5mos+). Make sure you sign up here!
Can't make these local sleep talks and wish you could? Get on the list for the next live sleep talk with me.
